The Myth of the Unicorn Moment

Unleashed: The Thriving Life Series – Entry # 4

How many of us are counting down the days to some future event—an event we believe will finally deliver happiness, joy, and fulfilment?

Maybe it’s a new job, retirement, a dream vacation, a big purchase, or some grand adventure.

That was me, searching for some magical "unicorn" moment that would suddenly deliver happiness.

For three consecutive years, I chased those magical moments on the road as I ran and cycled across Canada. I saw plenty of bears—but despite all that searching, I never did see a unicorn.

Here is the hard truth: the big, transformational moments in life become less frequent as we age. As the years pass, milestone experiences—our first kiss, our time at university, early adventures—naturally happen less often. There is simply less newness, especially the kind charged with emotional intensity. That’s why certain memories stand out so clearly while others fade into the background.

After a certain age, the patterns that shape our thoughts and behaviours are largely established. We can feel static because, in many ways, we are repeating what is familiar. Most “first-time” experiences happen in our younger years, often by our twenties, and certainly by midlife. It’s no surprise this is when many people begin to question everything.

So what do we do?

We start searching for ultimates.

What is my purpose in life?

What is the ultimate meaning of my existence?

But perhaps there are no ultimates.

We are living beings who grow, evolve, and change constantly. How could there be one fixed purpose or single ultimate meaning for an entire lifetime? Life is not that static.

Knowing this, we need to stop the endless search and get busy living.

There are really two worlds we move through each day.

The first is the transactional world, where most of us spend most of our time. In this world, everything is tied to outcomes. We go to work to get paid. We drive to the store to buy groceries. We take the kids to school so they can learn. This world is necessary—it keeps life functioning in an organized and efficient way.

But there is another world.

The world of meaning, presence, and awareness.

The problem is that while we are consumed by transactions, we often miss the small moments that could bring us joy, purpose, and connection. Think about the daily drive to work: you notice a crack in the windshield and immediately think, I need to get that repaired. Your attention locks onto the problem in front of you, and in doing so, you miss the breathtaking sunrise unfolding just beyond the glass.

Now imagine that moment repeated over a lifetime—day after day, year after year—sunrises quietly passing by unnoticed. And perhaps one day, much later in life, you realize how much beauty was always there, just beyond your attention.

That is how life so often happens.

We become so busy fixing, solving, planning, and reacting that we overlook what is already here.

So what can we do?

We need to learn how to spend more time in a calmer, freer state—one where the nervous system is less driven by stress and urgency. In that state, we begin to see life differently. We notice more. We feel more. We become aware of what was always present.

And that awareness begins with presence.

It begins with slowing down enough to actually notice the life we are already living.

Once you develop this skill, you stop waiting for one big “unicorn moment” to transform your life. Instead, you begin to recognize many smaller moments of meaning and joy—moments that are already happening every day.

No unicorn required.

These are skills that can be learned, and they are part of the work we do through Heroes Unleashed programming. If life feels a little flat, if something feels missing, or if you’ve been searching for “something more,” reach out.

At the very least, in a 30-minute conversation, I can help open your mind to the possibilities that exist today—not someday, not at the end of the rainbow.

Life is far too precious to spend waiting.

Stop searching.

Stop waiting.

Start thriving.
