COMPLETED SUMMER 2023
Ride for Change - In Summer 2023, Matt Devine rode 12,500km across Canada in support of 'You Can Ride 2'
Running 7 marathons in 7 days through the Canadian Rockies profoundly changed Matt. His purpose had been redefined and after a short recovery, another mission was planned. Common to their first mission, Matt and Nicole would once again be working to help children, this time by supporting You Can Ride 2.
This time Matt decided to ride 12,500 km around Canada, the hard way, east to west. For over 100 days Matt pushed his body to exhaustion fighting through every possible condition Canada has to offer including: cold, wind, rain, elevation, bugs and even forest fires.
By the time Matt crossed the finished line $100,000 dollars had been raised and an unstoppable movement had been ignited.
Whisper to a Roar Documentary about Matt's Ride for Change Journey
Matt Devine has reached a crossroads in his life and determines the path forward is to ride 12,500 kms around Canada in support of a local charity. In 10 short months, Matt and his wife, Nicole, develop the mission plan, acquire sponsorship, and complete training for the gruelling journey ahead. At the start line in Halifax, the journey looks to begin on the right foot but soon the realization of the magnitude of what lies ahead becomes all too clear. Whisper to a Roar is about one man's ride across and around Canada to raise funds and awareness for You Can Ride 2, an organization that breaks down the barriers of riding a bike for children with disabilities through adaptive cycling. First released as 4 separate episodes, this version of Whisper to a ROAR is the Whole Story, presenting an enhanced view of the ride and everything that happened along the way and after.
About You Can Ride 2
A charitable program of Goodwill Industries of Alberta, You Can Ride 2 is an organization that offers children with disabilities the opportunity to find joy and freedom through movement by reducing barriers to riding a bike.
You Can Ride 2 was started in 2003 by our Strategic Director, Janine Halayko, after a 9-year-old girl she was working with as a physiotherapist asked if she was the only child in grade 3 that could not yet ride a bike. This inspired Janine to create a cycling group that would teach children with coordination challenges how to ride a bike.
The organization has grown and evolved a lot in the past 19 years; Now operating out of Goodwill’s Impact Centre and has expanded programming to help even more children experience the joy of riding a bike
